Built from 1992 to 1997, the 850 sedan established Volvo as a high end automaker in the US. It was the first FWD Volvo to hit american shores. The T-5R variant was a limited production race inspired car available as a 4dr sedan or estate wagon. It was available only in 3 exterior colors... this Cream Yellow version was a rare bird in the US.... and identical interiors that were tutone leather and dark gray ultrasuede with birchwood accents.
The model's finish really makes it pop despite the rather pedestrian styling cues. The spoiler, aero-front bumper and 17" wheels do give this car/model an edgier sporty look. There's nothing here to disappoint with Aa's crystal clear glazing, exquisite lensing, precise shutlines, functional suspension and great chromework including the 3-D badging. Note: the vertical bar left of the "850" on the deck lid is the Motorsport logo unique to the '95 model.
Under the hood is a fine representation of the 2.4L 20v turbocharged, transverse mounted 5 cylinder inline engine. Once again Aa gets the most out of textured plastic and paint to provide realism and yet staying within a relative midrange pricepoint. One curious note: although the hood remains in the open position unaided, on the left fender wall there is a hinged rigid wire with looped tip that in no way would represent a real strut and may just be an aid in posing the model should the hood not stay open.
The interior is again classic Aa in quality. The components are relatively flash free. The carpet pile is very realistic, the gauges are legible. The lighter gray ultrasuede accents on the door panels actually feel like suede so for perfect color and texure separation, they are actually separate inserts on the door panels. The trunk is perfectly carpeted and there are some nice touches that include the replication of the weatherstripping.
If you're a fan of Swedish iron, the 850 T-5R represents a historically significant milestone.
